Master Thesis 2025: Performance Modelling and Validation of a Mechanical Pressure Regulator for Spacecraft Propulsion Systems
OHB Sweden is a leading Swedish supplier of space systems. We develop, build, test and commission satellites and subsystems for space missions in, for example, communication, earth observation and space research for institutional and commercial customers within and outside Europe.
OHB Sweden is currently developing a mechanical pressure regulator prototype with support of the European Space Agency. There is a need to simulate and better understand the transient response of the regulator. The regulator consists of the main regulation mechanism, as well as ancillary components such as filters and a slam attenuator. The responsibility of the student is to study in depth the transient response of the regulator assembly through detailed modelling, and by doing so, evaluate ways of improving said response.
The tasks of the master's thesis topic are as follows:
- Evaluate and model the transient performance of a mechanical pressure regulator prototype and its ancillary components by creating a 1D performance model in the modelling software EcosimPro.
- Analyze the performance of the regulator assembly's constituent components using CFD and/or testing as input to the EcosimPro model (if deemed necessary).
- Validate the performance model by comparing its results with existing test data and, if necessary, perform additional flow tests as needed.
- Once a valid EcosimPro model has been established, study how tuning individual parameters (spring coefficients, orifice sizes, discharge coefficients, coefficients of friction etc.) may improve the transient response of the regulator and its ancillary components.
- Based on the results produced in the previous step, propose design improvements to the regulator assembly.
- If time allows, the student may also manufacture and validate the new design(s) through testing.
The required candidate’s skills are:
- Understanding of mechanical systems and fluid dynamics.
- Experience with CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL) for component analysis.
- Skills in data analysis and model validation using test data.
- Strong problem-solving abilities to optimize system parameters.
- Self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and in teams
- Excellent communication and presentation skills for sharing findings with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
What can we offer the student for them to succeed in their master's thesis?
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of satellite modelling and development while gaining valuable experience in the space industry. During the Master Thesis, OHB Sweden is offering support and technical expertise from highly skilled, motivated and innovative Propulsion engineers.
The Master thesis requires you to be in Stockholm at our office in Kista and cannot be done remotely. We follow the export controls law and this regulates which country of birth people who work on our projects may have. We at OHB cannot influence this law.
We look forward to your application! 😀
