Master Thesis 2025 : Adapting Small-Satellite Platform Design for New Payloads
OHB Sweden is a leading Swedish supplier of space systems. We develop, build, test and commission satellites and subsystems for space missions in, for example, communication, earth observation and space research for institutional and commercial customers within and outside Europe.
This Master Thesis focuses on adapting and reiterating a small-satellite platform design to meet the requirements of new payloads, specifically hyperspectral detector/camera systems. The project will involve market research, feasibility analysis, payload requirement evaluation, and the iterative adaptation of the platform to ensure compatibility with new technologies while meeting mission and system requirements.
The tasks of the master's thesis topic are as follows:
- Conduct market research on hyperspectral detectors/cameras.
- Study which payloads would complement European institutional missions
- Analyze the feasibility of integrating hyperspectral payloads on small satellites (<250 kg).
- Iterate feasible payload requirements to maintain compliance with mission and system requirements.
- Modify the current small-satellite platform design to accommodate such payloads.
- If needed propose RFD (Request for Deviation) for adjusting System and Mission requirements for state-of-the-art technologies.
The required candidate’s skills are:
- Strong background in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Knowledge of satellite platform design and payload integration is a plus.
- Familiarity with hyperspectral imaging, detector/camera systems.
- Skills in requirement definition, traceability, and system-level engineering.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and in teams
- Effective communication and documentation skills
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of future state-of-the-art Earth Observation satellite design while gaining valuable experience in the space industry. During the Master Thesis, OHB Sweden is offering support and technical expertise from highly skilled, motivated and innovative Systems engineers.
The Master thesis is done with us in Kista and cannot be done remotely.
